Four-legged friends, both today and throughout the 20th century, have become the center of attention for photographers all over the world.

A couple with a dog on their shoulders. Great Britain, 1910s.

It is not entirely clear why and for what purpose, but the dog is happy.

A dog in a harness, 1930s.

Big dogs need good exercise. Living in the city on the couch emasculates the very essence of a dog. Therefore, I think that such a small chariot will not harm a furry friend.

Camberley Kate and her stray dogs in England, 1962. Catherine Ward, affectionately known as Camberley Kate, was a British dog lover and eccentric.

She never turned away a stray dog, caring for over 600 dogs in her lifetime.

She was well known to the people of Camberley, Surrey, for what historian Arthur Bryant described as a "striking sight" pushing a wooden cart along Camberley High Street "surrounded by dogs of all sizes and breeds".

A dog dressed as a human with a cat "on its lap", 1950s.

Videos and photos of people dressing their pets in their everyday clothes are now going viral on the internet.

In Yekaterinburg, for example, a couple of years ago a dog shelter dressed its dogs in clothes and arranged an interesting photo shoot to attract attention and find owners.

Golfer with support Teddy the dog holds the little actor Jackie Lucas by the golf jacket as he tries to hit the ball floating down the river. A promotional still from the unreleased Mack Sennett short film "Rough and Ready", directed by William Campbell, 1923. Teddy, a Great Dane, was also known as Teddy Keystone.

A new generation of drivers takes the wheel, 1930.

The action takes place in a parallel universe where dogs have evolved into intelligent beings, and people are their pets.

"The Walk", 1910s.

This is one of the pictures of the famous photographer Harry Whittier Frees. He photographed animals since 1902, creating interesting scenes and dressing them in tiny costumes.

He borrowed animals from friends and local pet stores. His mother made the costumes. The process of shooting took a very long time, so he photographed animals for 3 months a year, and the rest of the time he rested and came up with new ideas.

He sold his unusual works to postcard makers.

A woman galloping with a collie, 1949.

Since then, an unusual friendship between humans and furry creatures has arisen and the first cameras have appeared, people, naturally, wanted to take pictures of themselves and their pets as a keepsake.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kern and their trained dog Bobby, circa 1905

Children with a dog in the yard, 1949.

A concierge's dog. Paris, 1929.

A watchdog awaits its owner.

A musical hostess, 1927.

American actress Sally O'Neill plays the violin while an American bulldog sits on its hind legs next to her. This is a still from the silent film Becky by director John P. McCarthy.

Wire fox terrier Asta jumps up to escape a vacuum cleaner, 1949.

This is probably a vacuum cleaner commercial, but it's pretty cool.

A bulldog named "Venus" served as the mascot of the British destroyer Vansittart in the 1940s.

A study of a little girl with a prize Scottish terrier, 1935.

A child in a toy car with a dog driver, 1935.

The car seems to have one seater. The steering wheel is in the middle. They are breaking the law.

Mrs. Walter A. Foote with her dog, 1933.

Photographs are a great invention after all. People have been gone for a long time, but they look at us as if they were alive...

A woman and her dog in the Harlem area. New York, 1943.

Belka and Strelka

And, as per tradition, I will add some of the most famous dogs of the 20th century to the selection.

The space dogs who flew on the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 5 on August 19, 1960.
