Broken Jaw in Two Places: A Student Bites Off a Candy with a Provocative Name (5 photos)
The Jawbreaker candy lives up to its name. The British student will now need braces.
British student Javeria Wasim and her friend bought a candy called Jawbreaker with gum inside. The 19-year-old couldn't wait to get her hands on the gum ball, so she bit off a piece.
As soon as she bit into the candy, her jaw started to hurt, and her friend noticed that her front tooth was chipped and the other was loose.
At the hospital, X-rays and CT scans showed that the girl had two jaw fractures.
After an hour-long procedure, the jaw was put back in place, and plates were installed on the upper and lower gums, fixed with wire for six weeks.
She admitted that the incident "traumatized" her so much that she will now give up sweets for the rest of her life. Javeria will also need braces to fix her "misaligned" teeth.
The student has been on a liquid diet of smoothies and soups and says the break has made her realise how important her mouth is. She has urged others to simply lick the candies, even if it takes weeks.
"It's better to spend six weeks getting there than to suffer the consequences of having your jaw wired shut for six weeks," says Javeria Wasim, who thinks it would be stupid to break her jaw in this way.
