BMW built a sports car M3 GTR like in the game Need for Speed (11 photos)
BMW and Electronic Arts have recreated one of the most famous sports cars of the NFS universe in real life — the BMW M3 GTR coupe, which first appeared on virtual tracks in NFS: Most Wanted in 2005. The event is dedicated to both the anniversary of Need For Speed itself and the upcoming release of the next update for the latest part of Unbound, with which the iconic M-car will return to the gaming space.
The project is based on a full-fledged track version of the BMW M3 GTR, stylized as a game prototype, by and large, only externally. Bavarian specialists modified the aerodynamic body kit and covered the body of the sports car with a recognizable livery. It took some extra work to make the silver color of the film recreate the shade of 20 years ago as realistically as possible.
In addition to the racing version, the M3 GTR also exists in a road version called Strassenversion. In the early 2000s, BMW developed such a modification within the framework of the homologation rules that were in effect at the time and even built a dozen prototypes, but at the end of 2001, the rules changed, and the need for a civilian M3 GTR disappeared. According to one version, only three such coupes exist at the moment, and all of them belong to the concern. According to another version, ten prototypes were nevertheless distributed among collectors, but their further fate is unknown.
The road GTR was equipped with the same engine as the racing one — a 4-liter V8 with a dry sump, but derated from 460 to 350 hp. The engine worked with a 6-speed manual and a locking differential, and could accelerate the car to 295 km/ h — such an M3 was faster than any other modifications of the E46 generation. It is noteworthy that they were going to sell road M3 GTR for 250 thousand euros. Not a single serial M3 costs that much even now.
A copy of the BMW M3 GTR from Need For Speed will be exhibited in the Munich BMW Welt from November 27 to January 6.
