Customs officers found snake nests in boxes with children's toys (2 photos)
In Germany, customs officers were checking parcels that had arrived from Indonesia. While scanning the boxes, they noticed a strange movement.
At the customs office in Leipzig, workers were checking parcels that had arrived from Indonesia. They were supposed to be delivered to the UK via Germany.
While scanning the boxes with the cargo, customs officers noticed movement between the children's toys that were being sent and discovered that the box contained snake nests.
The first parcel contained nine Asian Wagler's molluscoids (pareas). The second contains five large Pacific boas (candoia). They live, among other places, on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.
Experts were called to the scene. The mollusc eaters were sent to the Institute of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Leipzig, since they are not under protection. The boas, which are a rare species of reptile and are under protection, were handed over to the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation.
