A father of many children faked his own death and fled the USA for Europe (3 photos)
In August, the man went fishing and disappeared. Police searched for him for several weeks, and then discovered that before his disappearance he had filed a report of a lost passport and received a new document.
American Ryan Borgwardt, who was considered missing, faked his death and probably fled to Europe, police found out.
A father of three from the American state of Wisconsin disappeared on August 12. He went to Green Lake to kayak and fish - and did not return.
Officers responded to a missing person call and went to the scene. They found an abandoned car and trailer. Officers then found an overturned kayak in the western part of the lake, where the water is about 225 feet deep, a life jacket, a fishing rod, a wallet, and Borgwardt's driver's license.
Experienced divers and search dogs were involved in the 28-day search for the man, but Borgwardt's body was never found. After some time, the sheriff said, officers decided to take the case in another direction. It turned out that on August 13, the day after he disappeared, Borgwardt's name was entered into a Canadian law enforcement database.
Investigators dug deeper into the investigation and found out that in May, the man filed a report of a lost passport and received a new document. Before his disappearance, Borgwardt also transferred money to an overseas bank, changed his email address, took out an insurance policy for $375,000, and communicated with a woman from Uzbekistan.
Officers also found that on the day of his disappearance, the man replaced his computer's hard drive and cleared his browser history. Police are confident that Borgwardt is now "somewhere in Europe."
"Ryan, if you are watching this, I ask that you please contact us or your family. We understand that anything can happen, but there is a family that wants their dad back," the sheriff said during a press conference.
