A man "lives" on airplanes: he wants to see the whole world without spending extra money on housing (4 photos)
Over five weekends in September and October, Luke Simmonds flew to Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Switzerland and France, where he admired Mont Blanc.
Budget traveller Luke Simmonds, 35, believes that day trips abroad are a “different way to travel”. The man visits a new country every weekend and sleeps on planes to avoid spending money on expensive hotels.
Luke became interested in travelling after the pandemic. One day, he came across a Facebook group where members were sharing extreme day trips. Inspired by the idea, he flew to Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Switzerland and France over five weekends in September and October, where he admired Mont Blanc.
"After a while it becomes addictive. You can go anywhere for a day. It's a good way to explore new places. If you like it, you can come back at any time," says Simmonds, an IT consultant from Guildford, UK.
The man always looks for the cheapest flights. Thus, his transfer costs less than one day spent in London. For example, in 2023, the traveler visited Poland, Sweden and Denmark in a week. He then flew to Eindhoven in the Netherlands with his 24-year-old girlfriend Amy Hughes, spending just £30 each for a return flight.
Simmonds also spent a day each in Estonia, Monaco, Nice, Gdynia in Poland, Legoland in Denmark, Nuremberg in Germany, Oslo in Norway, Churwalden in Switzerland and Brussels, Belgium.
He also visited Kaunas, Lithuania, with his brother Ollie, where they spent only 17 hours but saw many interesting locations.
"Without being able to travel, I wanted more - to get out and see the world," the extreme sports enthusiast says.
He has seven more day trips booked, including a trip to Agadir, Morocco. Flights there from the UK cost just £8.99.
