Twisting a steel cable

In the construction of a wire rope, individual strands are laid helically around a center (which may be a small steel rope, a wire strand, or a non-metallic fiber strand).

These strands provide most of the breaking strength of the rope. The process of laying the strands onto the core is critical to creating a strong, durable wire rope.
