Archaeologists have discovered a throne room in Peru dating back to the 7th century AD (8 photos)

In the coastal valley of Panjamarca, researchers have found an ancient throne room with columns and frescoes. According to experts, the ceremonial room was built by the Moche culture 1,300 years ago and belonged to a female chief.





The room is decorated with frescoes that depict a powerful woman on a throne, receiving visitors.

"The ancient frescoes may indicate that this place was used by a woman, possibly a ruler," says Jessica Ortiz, the project's leader.

Archaeologist Jose Ochatoma added: "There are no empty surfaces. Everything is painted and decorated with mythological scenes and characters."



According to Ochatoma, the walls depict scenes from Moche ideology. The throne room likely dates to the period when the Moche culture occupied the coastal valleys of northwestern Peru.

The researchers also discovered an adjacent room, which they called the Hall of the Intertwined Serpents because of the fresco that depicts it. The walls also depict warriors, anthropomorphic weapons, and a monster chasing a man.

"We have found iconography that has not been seen before in the pre-Hispanic world," Ochatoma added.

The finds were made in Panamarca, off the Pacific coast. The site is located more than 400 kilometers north of the Peruvian capital, Lima.

The Andean country is rich in archaeological sites, many of which date back thousands of years.

More than 500 years ago, the Inca Empire flourished here, ruling the highlands of South America until the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors in the 16th century.
