116-year-old nun revealed the secret of longevity - prayer and daily routine (4 photos)
Ina Canabarro Lucas is the second oldest person in the world, just a month younger than record holder Tomiko Itooka. She turned 116 on June 8. She lives in the Teresian Sisters' home in Porto Alegre, Brazil, where she follows a strict daily routine.
Even as a child, doctors told her that she would not live to adulthood. But Lucas is confident that prayer and a proper daily routine worked wonders.
Ina was born in 1908 to a large family. The girl was very weak and thin.
Around 1928, Lucas moved to Montevideo, Uruguay, and later became a nun. In 1930, she returned to Brazil, where she taught Portuguese and mathematics.
During her life, Ina witnessed two world wars and lived through the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite her advanced age, the nun remains healthy and cheerful.
Kleber Vieira Canabarro Lucas, the nun's nephew, believes that the secret to her long life is daily prayer.
He added: "I think it is due to deep devotion to others and spirituality."
"My secret, the main secret, is prayer. I pray every day for everyone in the world," the nun says.
She never loses her sense of humor, and when asked how old she is, she jokingly replied: "A little. 116."
