On Wednesday, April 5, 54-year-old Dr. Mark Chavez appeared in court in Los Angeles. He admitted to illegally distributing ketamine, thereby confirming his involvement in the death of the Friends star. Now he faces up to 10 years in prison.
In August, Chavez entered into a plea agreement and became the third suspect to plead guilty in Perry's death. The doctor is currently free on bail, but cannot leave the country and has lost his medical license.
His attorney Matthew Binninger said his client is remorseful and is trying to do everything he can to right the wrongs he's done.
Matthew Perry died in October 2023 at the age of 54. The actor was found unconscious in a hot tub, the cause of death being drowning due to acute ketamine exposure.
According to court documents, Perry used ketamine six to eight times a day. A close friend of his said he was getting the drugs from a "network of corrupt doctors."
Five people were charged: Perry's personal assistant Kenneth Iwamasa, three doctors, and a street dealer.
Perry had struggled with addiction for years, dating back to his "Friends" days, when he found fame as Chandler Bing. He starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer on the hit NBC sitcom from 1994 to 2004.
