The five most unusual football stadiums in the world (12 photos + 1 video)
When it comes to the most memorable football stadiums in the world, giants like Wembley in London or Maracana in Rio de Janeiro come to mind. However, there are other, no less amazing places that also deserve attention.
Let us introduce you to five of the most unusual football stadiums on the planet that can leave a lasting impression. One of them is located under a functioning railway, another is on the roof of a shopping center, another has entrances hidden between houses with terraces... Which one seems the strangest to you?
1. Stadium with a railway line running through it — Slovakia
Fans of the amateur football team Tatran, which is based in the village of Cerny Balog, located in central Slovakia, have become accustomed to the fact that sometimes their view is blocked by a train.
Because between the football pitch and the terrace for fans there is an active railway line. In the summer, a steam locomotive passes by, creating noise and releasing smoke into the crowd, even during the match.
The Cerny Balog stadium was built in the 1980s, when the old railway was no longer in use. For ten years, the stadium was entirely at the disposal of the players and fans.
However, in the 1990s, the railway line was restored and officially opened as a heritage railway, accessible to tourists.
2. Stadium with entrances built into a row of houses - Luton, UK
At first glance, Oak Road in Luton may appear to be an ordinary British terraced street. However, look deeper and you’ll find a surprising discovery: two entrances to Luton Town Football Club’s Kenilworth Road stadium.
The stadium’s sixth and seventh gates are located between two properties, with the front doors of the neighbouring buildings directly above them. Once through the gates, fans can climb metal stairs that take them above residential gardens to Blocks E–G.
3. Stadium on the Roof of a Shopping Mall – Belgrade, Serbia
Never let a good shopping mall roof go to waste!
That’s the motto of Belgrade, where the stadium of FC Vozduhovac is located on the roof of the Stadion shopping mall. The complex is home to popular fast food chains, fashion outlets and sports shops, so fans can take advantage of the break to buy new clothes or eat, and return to the stadium for the second half.
The stadium, opened in 2013, has been approved by UEFA to host Champions League and Europa League matches. Its capacity is around 5,000.
4. Stadium between 15th-century fortresses – Croatia
The Igraliste Batareja stadium is located in the city of Trogir, which has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The stadium pitch is located between two 15th-century fortresses: St. Mark's Tower and Kamerlengo Tower.
These historic buildings not only create an impressive backdrop for the stadium, but also serve as unique football terraces. Fans can watch their favorite team HNK Trogir play from these terraces.
5. Stadium at 4,150 meters - Bolivia
Warning! This stadium may cause dizziness.
The Municipal Stadium in El Alto, Bolivia, located at 4,150 meters above sea level, is one of the highest professional stadiums in the world. It is a real challenge for football players.
The men's national football team usually plays its matches at the Hernando Siles Stadium in La Paz. However, last year, Argentina's players had to use personal oxygen tubes to adjust to the altitude.
This year, the team decided to play their World Cup qualifier against Venezuela in El Alto, which is 559 meters higher than La Paz. They hoped that the higher altitude would give an advantage to the local players, who were better adapted to the local conditions.
And it worked! They won the game comfortably, 4-0.
