Among other things, the four space tourists will become the first non-professional astronauts in history to go into space.
On Tuesday, the American company SpaceX successfully launched the Falcon 9 launch vehicle with the Crew Dragon spacecraft, which has four tourists on board. As part of the commercial Polaris Dawn mission, non-professional astronauts will go into outer space for the first time in history.
It is noted that the space tourists were sent to a record distance from Earth in recent decades - 1,400 kilometers. This is more than three times the altitude of the International Space Station. They say that the last time they flew such a distance from Earth was during the Apollo mission.
Elon Musk bragged on social media that the astronauts of the Crew Dragon spacecraft are "further from Earth than any other person in the last half century."
It is reported that the Polaris Dawn project was organized by American billionaire and amateur pilot Jared Isaacman. Back in 2021, he signed a contract with Elon Musk's company for three flights. In addition to him, former military pilot Scott Poteet, head of the SpaceX astronaut training program Sarah Gillis and former NASA biomedical flight director, chief engineer for space operations Anna Menon went into space.
The Polaris Dawn mission is scheduled for 5 days. Tourists will go into outer space not only for history and new sensations, but also to test new spacesuits from SpaceX, models of which are planned to be used for flights to the Moon and Mars.
