American Receives Combo of Dangerous Viruses After Mosquito Bite (3 photos + 1 video)
The insidious bloodsucker bit the man so badly that doctors are still fighting for his life and the prognosis is not encouraging.
54-year-old Joe Casey from Kensington, New Hampshire was vilely bitten by an infectious mosquito on August 8. A few days later he became very ill and was urgently hospitalized.
After testing, it turned out that the mosquito had infected him with as many as three deadly viruses: Eastern equine encephalitis, West Nile virus, and St. Louis encephalitis.
Casey and his wife Kim have been married for 23 years and are raising four children: Jake, Lily, Max, and Ben.
"He was in the ICU for over three weeks on a ventilator and then had a tracheostomy," his family said.
An MRI showed that Casey had swelling and fluid in his brain due to encephalitis. Doctors are still unable to determine which virus is causing the complication.
All three of these viruses are transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people infected with these viruses do not show symptoms. Those who do may experience fever and flu-like illness, such as headache, fatigue, and joint pain. Those who recover from severe neuroinvasive disease caused by these viruses may be left with long-term mental or physical disabilities.
The news of Casey's illness comes just a week after Steven Perry, 41, of Hampstead, New Hampshire, died of acute enterovirus enterovirus disease (EEE). He developed a severe central nervous system disorder.
In recent weeks, the United States has seen an increase in several mosquito-borne viruses. At least 377 cases of West Nile virus, including 255 cases of neuroinvasive disease, have been reported in 38 states this year, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
