More than 25 people were injured.
The warm late evening of August 17 in the German city of Leipzig was supposed to pass in a festive atmosphere. And it is not surprising, because the local music festival "Highfield" was taking place near Lake Stermtal. Many people gathered to listen to rock and pop performers.
The event was proceeding as normal until, for unknown reasons, two cabins with visitors on the Ferris wheel caught fire. At approximately 21:00, one of the 24 cabins of the Ferris wheel initially caught fire. Then the fire spread to the second cabin.
Investigators are still trying to figure out what exactly happened during these minutes. In any case, according to the police, about 25 people were injured: four of them received burns, and one was injured as a result of a fall.
At the time of the tragedy, all the cabins of the wheel were filled with people. The fire broke out during the performance of the German rapper "Ski Aggu". The musician decided not to stop his performance during the fire. Here is how he commented on the situation:
"They just whispered in my ear that I should under no circumstances cancel the show, but first maintain a dialogue with you guys, so that there would be no mass panic"
Two of them received serious injuries. More than 25 people inhaled acrid smoke from burning plastic. All the victims were urgently hospitalized in the nearest hospital.
The festival on Lake Stürmtal, which was attended by about 30,000 guests, was interrupted for about two hours. After that, the show continued with a performance by rapper Cro.
The causes of the fire are being investigated. The criminal investigation department has launched an investigation.
