Canadian Man Gets to Mexico by Public Transport (6 photos)

William Hui, 40, began his journey along the Pacific coast on June 24. He covered the entire route from his hometown in British Columbia to Tijuana by train and bus in 9 days.

Moreover, William came up with several rules for himself: Greyhound buses and Amtrak trains are prohibited, and walking between transfers should be kept to a minimum.

"I have never had to walk more than 15 minutes from one bus stop to another," the traveler said.

A systems engineer at TransLink, the Vancouver transit authority, shared the story of how he came up with the idea.

In 2013, he tried to drive as far south as he could from Vancouver, but only got as far as Salem, Oregon. According to him, there was virtually no transportation through Oregon into central California.

That all changed when he discovered a new four-hour bus route from Eureka in northern California to Ukiah, a two-hour drive from San Francisco. William immediately began planning a public transportation trip to Mexico.

Hui has noticed how public transportation has changed in eleven years: buses now have WiFi access and accept credit or debit cards.

When asked how he spends his time on the road, the man replied: "I really like to admire the scenery, look at how the cities are built. When we passed the coast or the forest, I contemplated nature."

William also saw huge farms in Southern California.

"I've seen them from the air before, but when you drive around the state, the size and expanse of the fields is completely different."

A Canadian was forced to cross all international borders on foot.

At the US-Canada border, border guards were skeptical of the traveler. However, when he reached the US-Mexico border, Hui noticed more pedestrians and crossed it without problems.

"What struck me most about this trip was how important transportation is to residents," William admitted.

Even when he was stuck in Los Angeles traffic, he had enough time to make his next transfer.

He spent a total of $200 on the trip and said it was worth every penny.
