It is difficult to find a photograph in which the cult director was present without his constant companion - a cigarette, which became part of his image and which ultimately destroyed him. David Lynch told Sight and Sound magazine in an interview that doctors recently diagnosed him with emphysema.

"I have emphysema from long-term smoking, and therefore I am housebound1, whether I like it or not. "It's dangerous for me to get sick, even to catch a cold," Lynch said.



The director also admitted that he can't leave the house, and it's not just because of the risk of catching a cold (covid), which, coupled with emphysema, could kill him, but because after a few steps he starts to choke. He added that if he is lucky enough to direct again, he will only be able to do it remotely.

"Smoking was something I absolutely loved, but it eventually caught up with me. It was part of my creative life: tobacco, the smell of it, lighting up and smoking, going back and enjoying a cigarette, looking at my work or thinking about things; there is nothing like it in this world, it is so beautiful. In the meantime, it is killing me. So I had to quit,” he said.



Emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a disease in which the alveoli become destructively damaged and enlarged. The lungs lose their elasticity, causing a person to experience shortness of breath even with little physical exertion. The World Health Organization has previously predicted that COPD will become the third leading cause of death worldwide by 2030.
