A woman went blind in one eye after taking a shower without removing her contact lenses (3 photos)
A Texas resident said that she usually takes a shower with her lenses on. But after another shower, she felt irritation in her right eye. Then the condition worsened sharply, and "unbearable pain" appeared.
After examining the woman, doctors told her that the Acanthamoeba parasite had gotten into her eye, penetrating the delicate tissues, damaging them.
Acanthamoeba keratitis usually affects people after contact with fresh, sea or tap water. Approximately 90% of infections occur in contact lens wearers.
If the parasites successfully penetrate the cornea, they will begin to multiply, causing severe eye pain, redness, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light. This can eventually lead to blindness.
In about 40% of cases, doctors have to scrape out the outer part of the eye to remove the parasites and then restore the area with a transplant, or the person will remain blind.
Now I can't even take a shower without a phobia
