Under the hood is an aluminum V6 with a volume of 2.7 liters (170 hp) with Weber 42DCNF carburetors. In 1973, the engine was increased in volume to three liters and acquired an innovative Bosch D-Jetronic injection system. The development of the engine took place under the direction of Maserati chief engineer Giulio Alfieri.
Hydropneumatic suspension "Hydractive". The system made it possible to adjust the ride height in five positions (60 mm; 155 mm; 175 mm; 230 mm; 255 mm). In addition to this, a unique self-centering steering system was developed. The braking system featured disc brakes on all wheels.
The SM had progressive adaptive headlights (which rotate using the steering wheel at the same angle as the wheels).
In addition to power steering, the car was equipped with a height- and reach-adjustable steering column, rain-sensing windshield wipers, a heated rear window, power windows, air conditioning and a cassette radio.
