Two brothers from Germany found a treasure in Lubomierz, Poland, based on a map that their grandfather drew in 1952. 
In 2016, two brothers from Germany went on vacation to neighboring Poland. One of the cities they visited was Lubomierz, located on the Polish-German border. But he was not chosen by chance. For many years now they had been listening to their grandfather’s amazing stories about his youth in Lubomierz, where he worked as a gardener. He said that before leaving in 1952, he buried valuables there and even at one time drew a map with a detailed explanation of how to find them. The brothers were not sure that the treasure actually existed, but still decided to go in search of it, which turned out to be a real adventure.

The map was found shortly before in old family archives. She also became the key to the secrets of the past. The man spent several years working as a gardener in Lubomierz, and by that time he had accumulated a certain amount of valuable things. Before leaving the city, he decided to hide his valuables so that he could return for them later or leave them as an inheritance for future generations.

Upon arrival in Lubomierz, the grandchildren ask one of the local residents to borrow a shovel. Of course, they didn’t tell her all the details, so the actions of the two foreigners seemed suspicious to her and the woman reported them to the police. The police arrived at the site and immediately stopped the excavations, saying that such activities were illegal and required official permission.

Within two days, the brothers completed the necessary formalities and began excavations. They were also joined by Zbigniew Kudyba, a specialist in the restoration of monuments, and several archaeologists who monitored the work.

The map left by grandfather could hardly be called complete. For the most part, it was a letter that described in detail the location of the treasure burial and only in the upper right corner there was a small sketch of the area. Two old jugs were found in the location indicated on the map. They were filled with magnificent finds: watches, jewelry, 19th-century coins and a cigarette case dating back to 1935. Grandfather was not willing to tell where he got them from, limiting himself to only general phrases. Most likely these treasures are war trophies.

All discovered items were sent for examination to determine their true value. If they turn out to be historically valuable, then, according to the law, they can be confiscated and transferred to a museum, which would mean that they will become part of general history and remain in Poland. Otherwise, the valuables will be transferred to the brothers.

This case is not the first in the history of the city. In 1972, children, playing near an old church, accidentally stumbled upon a bowl with gold coins from different European countries. And in 2008, workers renovating the administrative building discovered a cache of 19th-century documents reflecting unique aspects of the city's history.
