A British woman discovered a guest from South America in a greenhouse (5 photos)
A resident of Wolverhampton, UK, discovered an uninvited guest in her greenhouse - a South American monkey. The homeowner called the trapping service and reported that a “strange wild animal” was jumping on her premises.
Gemma Warner, from the charity Wings and Paws, said: "We asked her to describe the animal and she said it was small and had a bushy tail. We thought it was just a squirrel or a baby fox."
But instead, there was a marmoset sitting on the tabletop. This primate, the size of a large cat, lives in South and Central America.
Gemma added: "The animal was very thin and hungry, but was smart enough to understand that it needed people's help. We believe it was a pet that was unfortunately thrown away or released when it was no longer needed."
The primate was named Marcel, and is now at an animal rescue center. The organization is trying to find him a new home.
He is tame and friendly with people, sitting on laps and shoulders.
Gemma added: "It's lucky we found him, if he had been left on the streets of Wolverhampton he would not have survived the cold."
Forest-dwelling marmosets feed mainly on tree sap, nectar and insects, but also eat frogs and chicks.
In the UK they are legal to keep as pets, but the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) advises against this as they require special conditions.
"Unfortunately, it is legal to own a marmoset in the UK, but we are campaigning against keeping primates as pets and urge the governments of England and Wales to support us," the RSPCA said.
