12 interesting facts about the Fallout series that you might not know (12 photos)
Many people know that the Fallout series is based on the video game series of the same name, but not everyone knows between which games the series takes place.
In fact, not “between which”, but “after which”, since the creators of “Fallout” decided to go according to the order of the timeline and chose a time that has not yet been explored in the universe. The first season takes place in two time frames at once - in 2077 and in 2296, that is, 9 years after the events of the game "Fallout 4", which takes place in 2287.
Executive producer Todd Howard stated that they specifically chose this timing because they did not want to depend on the story of any game and adapt anything other than the setting.
The history of Vault Boy will be explored
Vault Boy is a sort of mascot of the Fallout universe that follows the player everywhere, as his image is often found throughout the game, and not only in the Pip-Boy. Despite the significance of this figure, its history has not been revealed, but the creators of the series promised that in the future they will tell how Vault Boy came to be and why he gives the thumbs up. There is controversy about the thumb, as fans of the games assumed that in this way it estimates the size of the nuclear mushroom, but the developers denied this. However, it is the assumptions of fans in the series that may turn out to be correct, because in “Fallout” characters several times show their finger in this way, referring to a nuclear mushroom mushroom.
Voltek number exists
When a telephone number appears in a particular film or TV series, some viewers call it out of interest in the hope of hearing something interesting. This happened, for example, with the series “Squid Game”, in which the real number of an ordinary person was shown, and thousands of people began to call it every day.
The creators of “Fallout” foresaw this and installed a special answering machine on the number shown in the advertisement. When fans started calling it, they all heard the same thing - the heartbreaking and insane scream of a Vault-Tec employee.
You can also write to him
Some fans did not limit themselves to just calling the number from the ad in Fallout. Someone texted and even received a reply thanking the sender for the letter and saying that the “next appointment” was scheduled for 33 weeks. 33 weeks could be not just a reference, but also a hidden announcement of a new game, a remaster of an old one, or something else.
Huge backpack of a knight of the Brotherhood of Steel
What might have been confusing to Fallout viewers was that each Brotherhood of Steel knight was followed by a squire with an unnaturally huge backpack that seemed impossible to carry for such a long time over such a long distance. But in reality, this is a reference to a feature of the inventory in the game - the whole point is that when the inventory is overloaded, the main character’s movement speed drops.
The creators of the series deliberately did not show iconic monsters
The Fallout series of games is known, among other things, for the abundance of various monsters, the most famous of which are wild ghouls, Deathclaws, Super Mutants, Beasts and others, but the series showed only radroaches and an unknown underwater horror, which is better not to be seen up close. When the first season of The Witcher was released, it was criticized for its almost complete lack of monsters, but Fallout avoided this criticism. However, director Jonathan Nolan justified himself just in case, saying that they did not add many monsters in the first season, since they were still exploring the universe and did not want to follow the simple path of fan service.
Familiar plot
A more significant reference, which everyone probably noticed, is the premise of the series. Everything is based on the fact that the main character Lucy MacLaine, having lived for many years in a shelter, decides to go out into the wasteland to find her kidnapped father. There were similar plots in the games “Fallout 3” and “Fallout 4”. In the third part, the main character one day learns about the escape of his father and, in the ensuing riot, leaves the destroyed shelter. In the fourth part, the main character, while in a cryochamber, sees how Vault-Tec employees deal with his wife and kidnap his son. Waking up years after this, the main character goes in search of his son.
"Fallout" became the second most popular TV series
Aaron Paul could star in Season 2
Breaking Bad fame Aaron Paul has never hidden his love for the Fallout franchise and seems to love Fallout: New Vegas the most. This love has gone too far, as Jonathan Nolan admitted that at the first opportunity he would invite Aaron Paul to play in the second season, which, interestingly, will be partly dedicated to New Vegas.
Filming took place in the abandoned city of Kolmanskop
When Lucy emerges from the shelter, she sees a terrible world with skeletons, dilapidated buildings, lack of drinking water and buildings half "buried" under a thick layer of sand. Despite the fact that the possibilities of graphics in cinema have gone very far, the creators of the series did not use it, but went to Namibia to the abandoned city of Kolmanskop, the last inhabitant of which left in 1956. Although some of the buildings were restored, there were enough abandoned structures that could be used to show a convincing post-apocalypse without graphics.
Composer: Ramin Djawadi
Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, who acted as executive producers of “Fallout,” also filmed “Westworld,” the composer of which was the well-known Ramin Djawadi, who wrote dozens of compositions for “Game of Thrones.” After Westworld, Jonathan and Lisa invited him to join them in Fallout, and he agreed. In addition, Djawadi also wrote compositions for “House of the Dragon”, the film “Warcraft”, “Jack Ryan”, “The Eternals”, “The Great Wall” and other films and TV series.
Bethesda was afraid to adapt its games
Bethesda studio director Todd Howard said that after the release of Fallout 3, they were often approached with proposals to adapt their games, but the studio always refused, arguing that “there is much more that could go negative” than “ what can go well." At the same time, they cited the example of the film “Doom” with Dwayne Johnson, Karl Urban and Rosamund Pike. The film turned out to be so terrible that after it many people thought several times whether it was worth adapting video games at all.
But everything changed after Jonathan Nolan approached Bethesda. He presented his vision to Todd Howard and convinced everyone that he could shoot something worthy, since he had already shot Westworld. The second season of this series, although it did not turn out to be particularly successful, in general it turned out to be quite good and could even replace “Game of Thrones” if it had maintained a high standard.
