Climbers die on Everest due to traffic jams (5 photos)

9 April 2024

Everest is such a popular peak that it can be more crowded than some provincial town. And there are even... traffic jams on the Himalayan ridge! In which two climbers died.

How did it happen

Two climbers died from altitude sickness and suffocation before they could descend. They thought they could do it faster, but due to heavy traffic, they had to stay on the mountain longer than they thought.

People with a crowd-conscious attitude should not climb Everest

This happened during the descent, the young Indian climber Anjali Kulkarni and 55-year-old American climber Donald Lynn Cash, who first fainted and died from altitude sickness.

Even the local Sherpas accompanying them, who were accustomed to climbing, said that the traffic at the top was tough and it was difficult to maintain strength.

Constant crowding on Everest

Some of the crowd are Sherpas, but they will also help

Traffic jams on Everest have been a fairly common problem in the last few years, which is written about almost every season. They are especially dangerous in the “death zone,” a particularly difficult section of the road where people slow down and the entire chain remains in the zone much longer than they should.

Let us remember that the air at the top of Everest contains only a third of the oxygen we are used to in the air at sea level. Few people can stay in such an atmosphere for a long time, so they take oxygen cylinders with them. But if you get stuck in a traffic jam, then as expected they will end before the end of the descent.

I was very amused by the picture from some tourist. Admission, by the way, is 11 thousand dollars

“The route is already dangerous due to natural conditions, there is always a risk, and the traffic jam only multiplies the risk factors,” the Sherpas say.

About 800 people climb Everest every year, and about 10 of them are going to do it completely without oxygen. It turns out only 1-2 due to very good genetics. At the same time, in the same year 2023, 18 climbers died; according to statistics, most often they die during the list, simply without calculating their strength.

Rubbish in the Everest parking lot, and who will carry it up, the Sherpas again!?

But such a traffic jam simply “finishes off” those who, with their last gasp, could still be saved.

In general, the love of climbing Everest has long become a strange obsession, and the public feels less and less pity for such people every year, as can be seen from the news headlines.

Well, at least now they force you to buy bags for poop, at least the top will be a little smaller.
