A gray winged something, without a head, but with glowing red eyes, fur and the ability to hypnotically influence others. It looks like a description of some character from a not very interesting horror movie. But numerous eyewitnesses insisted that they saw this thing with their own eyes and felt its impact.

On the night of November 15, 1966, on a remote road near the sleepy town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, four people driving along a deserted but completely safe road came across a creature. People were unable to identify this creature. In the headlights it appeared to be a large white humanoid creature with bright red eyes and wings. The four rushed away and, to their amazement, saw that the creature was chasing the car. And he doesn’t run, but flies right above them, no matter how fast they rush. The creature followed them to the edge of Point Pleasant and then disappeared into the night sky. Residents began to call this something Mothman.

Mothman returns

Later that night, in a town located 160 kilometers from Point Pleasant, a man, Newell Partridge, was fighting with a television: the device categorically refused to work for no apparent reason.

Tired of struggling, Newell left the house to establish the source of the terribly annoying tedious high-frequency sound. The guy went on reconnaissance with his hunting dog. Partridge shined a flashlight along the boundaries of his property, and the beam ended up pulling two red bicycle reflectors out of the darkness. Partridge was surprised to realize that they were eyes. The dog bravely rushed at their owner. But no one ever saw the dog again.

The next evening, the woman reported that she was getting out of the car when a tall creature stood up next to her: “It seemed like it was lying down. It slowly rose from the ground. A big gray creature. More than a man, with scary glowing eyes.”

Running into the house, she heard the sounds of some movement on the porch and, carefully looking out the window, met the gaze of two huge red eyes.

Local newspapers began to write about this story and named the unknown creature Mothman. The authorities, wanting to contain the spread of panic, said that the creature was just a very large heron or crane. Possibly an owl or an eagle owl. But few people believed them.

Dozens of witnesses

In the following months, the creature continued to appear and terrorize residents of the area. Writer John Kill claimed that at least 100 people had the dubious honor of encountering the frightening creature.

Apparently, everything happened around an abandoned munitions plant located near Point Pleasant. If this really was Mothman's lair, then you couldn't imagine a better place. The crumbling factory was replete with empty rooms and passages.

Collapsed Silver Bridge in Point Pleasant

On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge connecting Point Pleasant to Ohio collapsed, killing 46 people. Before the collapse, the same winged creature was seen on the bridge. After the tragedy he was never seen again. Some thought it was a coincidence, others did not. Others were convinced that he was trying to warn residents.

Even though Mothman was never seen again, he continues to be the subject of discussion and debate among various theorists and skeptics. Theories include everything from space aliens to top-secret government experiments. The story of this creature even formed the basis of the 2002 film “The Mothman Prophecies,” where the hero played by Richard Gere tries to get to the bottom of the phenomenon.

Who was the mysterious Mothman, and where did he go? These questions remain unanswered.
