“They didn’t deserve it”: viewers criticized films with Oscar aspirations (10 photos)

We have repeatedly made posts dedicated to various “Oscar training manuals”. And even though today a lot of noise is devoted exclusively to “color diversity” and various jokes with orientation, this essentially does not play a special role. “Oscar beggars” haven’t changed their methods since the beginning of the 2000s. And the strokes used there are quite broad, for example, the genre must certainly be biopic and drama. The main characters are oppressed representatives of society, and the plot is built around moral issues. In fact, there is nothing bad in the above! Everyone can easily remember at least five historical dramas that deserved all their awards. However, it was these films that came out so... “strained” that watching them begins to make you feel nauseous. Let's take a look at which films with Oscar nominations disappointed many viewers. Do you agree with them?

Napoleon (2023)

I watched a bit of Napoleon, but I couldn't help but notice that everyone had a British accent except Joaquin Phoenix. What a strange, distracting choice. They should have hired a dialect coach for him or just forced everyone to use an American accent.

I watched it last night and couldn't get past his accent and the fact that he looked old.

Napoleon was young, that was his whole point. But Joaquin didn't just look older than expected, he looked older in the role. So there was a lot missing.

Also, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) looked much younger, whereas she was older than him.

Alexander (2004)

Speaking of "Alexander", I will never forget Wesley Morris's opinion: "Alexander is full of bright moments, but they are all in Colin Farrell's hair."

Nine (2009)

I'll always remember the Empire Magazine article about Nine that cast a shadow on it...

It said something like: “Director: Oscar winner Rob Marshall, Starring: Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis, Oscar winner Judi Dench, Oscar winner Marion Cotillard, Oscar winner Oscar winner Penelope Cruz, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, Oscar winner Sophia Loren, Golden Globe winner Kate Hudson... and MTV Video Music Award winner Fergie.”

Diana: A Love Story (2013)

Naomi Watts, who played the role of Diana, was 15 years older than her character at the time of filming! And this is very noticeable.

I wonder how a few years later Kristen Stewart (?!) received an Oscar nomination for her role in the film about Diana? If you told me ten years ago that Kristen did better than Naomi, I wouldn't have believed it.

J. Edgar (2011)

One day I decided to watch all the movies Leo was in and I watched this one and it was one of the most boring movies I've ever seen. Horrible.

Ferrari (2023)

The Gucci house was exactly the same. I had high hopes for him, but they were not met. It was very boring, with completely boring acting.

It is truly incredible how Michael Mann, the director behind such gripping films as Heat and Collateral, managed to make such a dull film about such an inherently interesting subject.

Labor Day (2013)

That very case when your favorite director lost face.

Kate Winslet had a lot of films in the 2010s that fell into the clickbait category. I remember that this one was supposed to be something special too.

Suffragette (2015)

Meryl Streep was advertised as one of the main characters, although, in fact, she only played a cameo role. Beyond that, the rest of the film is a tedious slog that does its best to tug at the heartstrings.

Australia (2008)

"Australia"! God, so much potential wasted.

All I remember about this movie is that I thought the ending was coming, mentally prepared to leave, and then was forced to stay another hour lol.

I Am Sam (2001)

Anyone remember I Am Sam? Sean Penn plays a mentally disabled man trying to get custody of his daughter (Dakota Fanning, perhaps her first big role?) with the help of Michelle Pfeiffer as his lawyer. The soundtracks were full of awkward Beatles covers. I feel like no one remembers it, and I even sometimes worry that the movie is my hallucination because of how bad Oscar bait it is.
