Low-rated films whose remakes only made things worse (10 photos)
There are many, so to speak, “folk” films that are really loved and re-watched. For example, "Doctor Dolittle" or "Charlie's Angels". On their native IMDb they received extremely mediocre ratings. And it would seem that since “the topic is not relevant”, it is better not to touch it, however, “filmmakers” take risks and make remakes, in the hope of restarting the story and creating a franchise. But, alas, the plans were not crowned with success.
Doctor Dolittle
• Doctor Dolittle (1998) - IMDb: 5.4
• The Amazing Voyage of Doctor Dolittle (2020) - IMDb: 5.6
The last two film adaptations of Hugh Lofting's series of children's books about a veterinarian who understands animal language, performed by two top actors of their time, showed the same result - "it's a fiasco, bro."
Here and further we will mention only the last two film adaptations, since the first famous “Doctor Dolittle” was released back in 1967 (and also did not receive audience recognition). We will also miss the sequels, because in all of the above cases they are even worse than the first part.
Charlie's Angels
• Charlie's Angels (2000) - IMDb: 5.6
• Charlie's Angels (2019) - IMDb: 5.0
Two film adaptations of the popular 1970s series. Both times the project turned out to be hype, and there were a lot of stars in the frame (although in the second case there were fewer), but it obviously didn’t work out with the love of neutral viewers, and not fans of the actresses.
Lara Croft
• Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) - IMDb: 5.8
• Tomb Raider: Lara Croft (2018) - IMDb: 6.3
Film adaptations of video games have always been a dangerous business, which most often ends in failure, and the creators of films about Tomb Raider got burned both in the early 2000s and in the late 1900s. Again, both times the films received ample attention, and the main roles were played by recently Oscar-winning actresses Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander at the time of release. But alas.
Cobra Throw
• Throw of Cobra (2009) — IMDb: 5.7
• G. I. Joe. Rise of Cobra: Snake Eyes (2021) - IMDb: 5.4
Both superhero projects were based on the G.I. toy series. Joe" by the American company Hasbro. But plastic toys are not required to have good plots and acting, but in films this is at least desirable.
Rollerball
• Rollerball (1975) - IMDb: 6.5
• Rollerball (2002) - IMDb: 3.1
This is a rather interesting project at the level of idea, based on the story of the same name by the American writer William Harrison. Both films depict a future in which the world is ruled by powerful corporations and the only sport is brutal rollerball. Athletes on roller skates and motorcycles ride at high speed around the track, trying to throw an iron ball into a trap and interfering with each other in any way. So much so that the deaths of athletes on the track are commonplace.
The original film did not captivate the viewer, although it was much more subtle, with an attempt to show some kind of socio-political underbelly of such a future, but the 2002 remake completely slipped into a continuous demonstration of the ruthlessness of rollerball itself.
Fantastic Four
• Fantastic Four (2005) - IMDb: 5.7
• Fantastic Four (2015) - IMDb: 4.3
This comic series is officially cursed, we tell you responsibly! Before these two criticized attempts, a 1994 version was made, which was not released at all. We are waiting for the 2025 version (already well aware of what will happen to it).
Note that Fantastic Four returns to screens every 10 years! Well, maybe at least in 2055 they will make a successful version.
Hitman
• Hitman (2007) - IMDb: 6.2
• Hitman: Agent 47 (2015) — IMDb: 5.7
We're all already well aware of how video games and their iconic characters are turned into films, and here's another example of a failure. In the case of Hitman, fans of the game were especially indignant - Agent 47 does not look like himself and behaves strangely. And in terms of plot, the films have completely run away from the events and spirit of the original. Non-fans of the game simply did not understand anything.
Haunted Mansion
• The Haunted Mansion (2003) - IMDb: 5.2
• The Haunted Mansion (2023) - IMDb: 6.0
The films are not based on a literary source or even a video game. And on a themed attraction at Disneyland! As absurd as it may sound, the super-successful Pirates of the Caribbean comes from the same source of adaptation. But with “Mansion” this didn’t work, and twice.
The first film became a typical comedy with Eddie Murphy, who was no longer so successful in the early 2000s, but the second was released quite recently and, despite a larger number of star actors from different generations, did not decide what it would do with the audience - to scare them or make them laugh. In the end, neither one nor the other worked out.
Street Fighter
• Street Fighter (1994) - IMDb: 4.0
• Street Fighter (2009) - IMDb: 3.7
Again an adaptation of a video game, and the first run with Jean-Claude Van Damme was very popular at the time, but more as a cultural phenomenon than as a good film. But the 2009 version, known as Streetfighter, develops the storyline of another heroine from the game, but does it even worse - the film has the lowest average rating of all in this collection.
Friday the 13th
• Friday the 13th (1980) - IMDb: 6.4
• Friday the 13th (2009) — IMDb: 5.5
You will be surprised, but not a single film about Jason has received approval from the mass audience. Neither the original 1980 film, where the killer was not even Jason himself, but his mother (spoilers!), nor even more so the trash sequels, in one of which the same hockey mask appeared, nor the inglorious remake of 2009 - there’s absolutely no chances.
