In Indonesia, crazy people are taught to fight (11 photos)

Have you ever wondered what they do with insane people in places where there are no mental hospitals? In remote provinces they become village fools, the rowdy ones are kept on chains in barns by the family. And if they break out, they are often beaten to death.

In Indonesia, they are trying to organize help for the mentally ill, but so far everything is in a frighteningly embryonic state.

A sick man lives in his mother's barn; she brings him the clothes she can find.

Are there mental hospitals in Indonesia?

And yes, and at the same time - no. Because in the state center for the mentally ill in Jakarta there are cell wards, provision of food from the state... but there are no doctors or medicines at all.

Some have no clothes because they rip them off. There are not enough cameras for violent people for everyone

They somehow didn’t think of treating the people. Because even the field of psychiatry itself is tragically underdeveloped here; there are about 800 psychiatrists in the country for 279 million people!

But is there any treatment?

I don’t want to think about the origin of the brown stains in the lower right corner

The whole point is that there are many private establishments that are not regulated in any way. They help people, and that's good.

For example, there is a martial arts school that houses the mentally ill as a charity.

Masters believe that practicing martial arts will help strengthen the body and restore order to the soul. And yes, they are fed and taken out for training (who is able).

Door of the martial arts center, but the sick are still restrained so that they don’t run away

Okay, this method may work for depression. But can you imagine what to do with professionally trained lunatics!? It’s good that their “orderlies” are masters from the same school.

That is, during riots they can still kill bream.

Do mentally ill people have any chance?

Rice and bean paste won't make you fat. But they don’t die of hunger here either.

The chances are slim; most likely, you will live in a shared cell without amenities for the rest of your life. If people work and are compassionate, they will sometimes take them out for a walk.

But there are clinics from charitable foundations that sometimes sponsor the purchase of medicines.

In religious charity centers they treat with water drops. There's no point, but at least it doesn't hurt.

If you can wait for a visit from a rare psychiatrist and get a diagnosis, then medications will be sent to the patient.

Most often, medications treat deep depression, bipolar disorder, and panic states from deep trauma. If the medications are appropriate, the patient will feel better.

Footage from a hospital where the violent and the depressed were separated. Depressed people don’t even have anything to do, no one takes away the plate

But you yourself know that the same antidepressants are different, and they are not selected the first time by doctors in cities. And you can wait another year for the doctor’s second visit.

The soul hurts, but the body is finished off

The main thing here is not even that there are no doctors. And the state in which the mentally ill are kept. Those whose relatives do not want to take care of them end up here.

The terrible truth is that if you don’t bring a mentally ill girl to the center, the locals may begin to “use” her for satisfaction.

That is, no one will monitor and check how they are kept. And the photographs speak for themselves - dirty, often covered in feces (because violent crazy people and simply depressed ones are kept together), as thin as possible.

In fact, it's worse than prison, because prisons have guards who don't let you fight. But here the shelter workers still have to clean themselves and prepare food. There is simply no one to constantly monitor what patients do with each other.

The washing method here, of course, is not the most humane. But I think all the orderlies there are burnt out

It's good that men and women are kept separately.

The impression of centers for the mentally ill in Indonesia is more than depressing. However, if you know that just a few years ago there was no talk of antidepressants or a course of treatment, at least some ray of hope appears.

For comparison, here is a shot of a psychiatric hospital in Smolens
