Monster house in Hong Kong. What does it look like without photoshop? (14 photos)

16 March 2024

Photos of this house will serve as an excellent illustration for any article about “their morals”, about the shocking slums, about the poor Hong Kongers oppressed by the damned capitalists, living in inhumane conditions...

Still would! One has only to look at the rows of these tiny balconies, like those of our “Khrushchev” buildings, at the endless floors going up, at the tiny rectangle of the sky somewhere unimaginably high above one’s head, and one immediately really wants to feel sorry for these unfortunate residents of Hong Kong, forced to huddle in such a creepy house, nicknamed the monster house.

Although, in fact, this is not one house, but an entire residential complex consisting of five buildings built in the shape of the letter “W”:

This is what this residential complex in Hong Kong looks like in a satellite image. Yandex maps.

Do you know how much it costs to rent a two-room apartment with a total area of 35-40 square meters with a microscopic kitchenette and a miniature bathroom? About 14 thousand Hong Kong dollars per month - that's almost 1800 US dollars! Horrible!

And some of the most cunning apartment owners have even divided their apartments into 2-3 parts with an area of 7-8 sq.m. and rent them out on a daily basis. For about $150 a day. Damned capitalists - profiting from the poor!

I hope my sarcasm was not subtle, as sometimes happens?☺ There are beggars and homeless people in any country, including Hong Kong. However, the average salary in this special administrative region of China last year exceeded 18 thousand Hong Kong dollars (2,300 US dollars).

And the two previous photos of the monster house, nightmarish and terrible, are nothing more than photoshop! Take a closer look at the endless rows of floors in these photos and you will see that the houses there are stacked on top of each other several times. In the second photo - at least twice, and in the first - four times in total!

Monster house created using Photoshop. Four houses stacked on top of each other.

In fact, the tallest building in this residential complex has only 18 floors. And this “courtyard” between houses with yellow, red and blue balconies in reality looks like this:

"Courtyard" of the monster house.

Well? Not such a monster?

However, this place is incredibly popular among tourists who come here to take extraordinary photographs and wander through the local shops:

Some photographers crop out the sky and earth in their photos to create the effect of “endless floors”:

Here is another house of this monster residential complex with the sky and earth cut off:

Photographs of a rectangular piece of sky taken from below are also very popular on the Internet. For example:

And this is also, of course, Photoshop. As I already wrote above, the complex is built in the shape of the letter “W”, and there is no such courtyard closed on all sides.

Not far from the monster house there is another high-rise building. And a photo of the sky taken from below actually looks like this:

All of the above does not change the fact that the apartments in the monster house are really tiny, and the elevators are slow. After all, this residential complex was built in the 1960s - during the demographic boom in Hong Kong. A real Hong Kong "Khrushchev"!

NAt one time it was considered excellent economy-class housing. Although it’s a bit cramped, it does have its own balcony!

The five blocks of the residential complex accommodate 2,243 apartments, which are designed for approximately 10 thousand people.

True, against the backdrop of modern Hong Kong skyscrapers, the monster house was simply lost. Can you guess where he is in this photo?
