Favorite films of famous actors (13 photos)

5 March 2024

Sometimes it seems that actors don't watch films at all. After all, they have enough cinema on the other side of the screen! However, they watch different films not only for work, but also like us - just for pleasure. And one of the most common questions actors are asked is quite obvious: “What is your favorite movie?” Of course they have them. In this post we have an interesting selection of films from famous actors. So, if you were looking for a movie for the evening, then the movie stars have something to recommend to you.

Arnold Schwarzenegger

• Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

• Titanic (1997)

• The Godfather (1972)

• Westworld (1973)

• The Sound of Music (1965)

• Unforgiven (1992)

Arnie loves solid classics without any arthouse admixtures, including “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” which was once greatly overshadowed by his own film “Conan the Barbarian,” presented by the same Universal Pictures studio. There also could not have been films by Arnold's idol Clint Eastwood (Unforgiven) and the most important director in his career, James Cameron (Titanic).

Matt Damon

• The Godfather Part II (1974)

• Goodfellas (1990)

• Make It Before Midnight (1988)

• Jaws (1975)

• Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Atomic Bomb (1964)

The actor is very fond of crime classics, especially those with Robert De Niro in the frame. He's clearly Damon's biggest idol. But where are the stars on such lists without Spielberg and Kubrick?

Anya Taylor-Joy

• Shining (1980)

• Big Fish (2003)

• Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

• Funny Face (1957)

The young actress also did not ignore Kubrick, highlighting his “The Shining.” In general, young actors and actresses often start by starring in horror films (which happened with Anya), the directors of which often force their students to watch horror classics.

Terry Gilliam

• Paths of Glory (1957)

• Citizen Kane (1941)

• The Seventh Seal (1957)

• Seven Samurai (1954)

• 8 and a half (1963)

• Pinocchio (1940)

The actor from the famous Monty Python troupe, who became an excellent director, went through the works of his classic colleagues, highlighting the films of Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles, Ingmar Bergman, Akira Kurosawa and Federico Fellini. Well, how could it be otherwise? Terry also loves Disney's debut feature film Pinocchio.

Hugh Jackman

• The Deer Hunter (1978)

• Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

• Singin' in the Rain (1951)

• Golf Club (1980)

There's a new addition to the Robert De Niro fan club. Hugh chose the anti-war masterpiece The Deer Hunter. Among the interesting things here is the not very popular “Golf Club” from the director of “Groundhog Day” and screenwriter of “Ghostbusters” Harold Ramis.

Rowan Atkinson

• Apartment (1960)

• This is Spinal Tap (1984)

• Being There (1979)

• Monsieur Hulot's Vacation (1953)

• Toy Story (1995)

The British actor chose many unobvious films, but “The Apartment” is the most popular comedy classic with 5 Oscars. In general, all the films on his list are comedies, which we had no doubt about. Surely it was they who inspired him already in his career.

Richard Gere

• Bicycle Thieves (1948)

• Babette's Feast (1987)

• Sunrise (1927)

The same actor who often calls his favorite films. Well, he deserves it! But among those where it is not, he singled out premium, but rather old films, including the Italian masterpiece “Bicycle Thieves”.

Nicolas Cage

• Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)

• East of Eden (1955)

• Apocalypse Now (1979)

• The Nutty Professor (1963)

• A Clockwork Orange (1971)

Cage's list includes the original "The Nutty Professor," which is a parody of the famous story "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde." Modern viewers are more likely to be familiar with the newer 1996 version starring Eddie Murphy. Apart from this screwball comedy, Cage's list is all classics.

Morgan Freeman

• Moulin rouge! (2001)

• Moby Dick (1956)

• Life of Pi (2012)

• High Noon (1952)

• Josie Wales - Outlaw (1976)

The Hollywood veteran also likes fairly recent films made in this century. Well, where would we be without Westerns - the genre of his youth. Morgan also noted the film of his colleague, collaboration with which brought Freeman himself his only Oscar - we are, of course, talking about Clint Eastwood. Unlike Arnold, the actor chose Clint's lesser-known western "Josie Wales - Outlaw."

Javier Bardem

• One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)

• The Godfather Part II (1974)

• Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

• The Deer Hunter (1978)

• Welcome Mr. Marshall (1953)

The Spaniard allegedly looked at the answers from other colleagues and gave away the base, adding a legendary film about a mental hospital and a not very well-known, but premium comedy from his homeland, “Welcome, Mister Marshall.”

Robert Pattison

• Arizona Dream (1991)

• Unstoppable (2001)

• Julia (2008)

• My heart stopped beating (2005)

• Headhunters (2011)

The actor recalled the existence of a not-so-famous film starring young Johnny Depp, “Arizona Dream,” directed by Emir Kusturica. In general, Pattinson surprised by naming two French films that are far from the first stars, “Unstoppable” and “My Heart Stopped Beating.” He is also a fan of the rather gritty Norwegian drama Headhunters. The person has interesting taste.

Jenna Ortega

• School Ball (1980)

• Insidious (2010)

• Possessed (1981)

• Witch (2015)

• Persona (1966)

The young actress was once asked to name her favorite horror films, and she came up with interesting options. Including the slasher “School Ball” with the rising star of the genre Jamie Lee Curtis and suddenly Leslie Nielsen, who had already sort of moved into a comedy role and appeared the same year in the famous “Airplane”. Jenna also included Ingmar Bergman’s existential drama “Persona” on the list. Here again we can assume that the actress watched such a movie in preparation for one of her roles in a horror film.

Matthew McConaughey

• Angel Heart (1987)

• Hud (1962)

• Adaptation (2002)

• The Fugitive Indian (1991)

• Master (2012)

It's been a while since we've come across any De Niro fans, have we? In Angel Heart, Robert played Lucifer, and it looked mesmerizing. In general, Matthew has a varied taste: here is a Western with Paul Newman, and a clever meta-comedy “Adaptation”, and a drama by Paul Thomas Anderson with an outstanding role by Joaquin Phoenix. Well, Sean Penn’s debut directorial work “The Fugitive Indian,” the script for which is based on the Bruce Springsteen song “Highway Patrolman.”
