A guy found a Rolex watch at the bottom of the ocean - and now it looks like new (5 photos)
Last summer, Australian surfer Matt Cuddihy gained popularity when he found a real Rolex watch on the ocean floor. Although they were covered in rust and corrosion, they still ticked! Not only did the guy find the owner, but the watch was also restored, and now it looks like new.
Last summer, Australian surfer Matt Cuddihy was diving off the coast of Noosa in Queensland when he found a Submariner Rolex watch. These cost about 20 thousand dollars. Even though the clock was covered in rust and corrosion, it still ticked. The guy saw an inscription on the back of the watch indicating the owner - and shared his find on social networks in the hope of finding him. And he did it! The owner, Rick Outrim, was found through social media. He was later contacted and his identity was established.
Rolex themselves learned about this story and decided to help Rick, who once served in the Royal Australian Navy, restore the watch to its former beauty. Fratello Watches has completely restored the watch - and now it looks like new. Rick said that he was given this watch at the age of 18. He wore them for about 50 years before he lost them in the ocean.
After restoration, the watch was officially returned to its rightful owner. Rick was happy! Rolex also invited him to lunch in Brisbane. He also said that Matt is now his friend for the rest of his life:
“It’s been so long since I’ve seen this watch that I’ve come to terms with the feeling of deep loss. I never thought it would come back to me, but the Rolex turned out to be absolutely wonderful. And Matt will be my friend for the rest of my life! He’s an amazing person,” said the owner hours.
