Conor McGregor gave the chef a Rolex watch, but he was accused of greed (5 photos + 1 video)
The Irish fighter shared a video on social media of how he surprised the chef of his Black Forge Inn pub in Dublin. McGregor, 35, presented the employee with a Rolex watch. However, his gift did not please the public.
McGregor told subscribers that he had prepared a surprise for the anniversary of Ed Rathorne, the chef of his establishment.
“Happy birthday! Happy 50th anniversary,” Conor says in the posted video. “I want to thank you for all the amazing work you do, we appreciate you being with us. I have a big gift for you, I want to present it in honor of the 50th anniversary. You have joined the Rolex Club. Your work is amazing, keep up the good work, we appreciate you."
Fans have noticed details on the watch that suggest it is one of Rolex's more budget-friendly models.
But the watches still cost thousands, and one publication estimates they could cost as much as $80,000.
“Bro, you couldn’t even give him a good Rolex,” one user joked in the comments.
Another wrote: "Why do I have a feeling Conor found this watch in his closet and was like 'I'm giving this to my chef'."
The former UFC champion's net worth is estimated at more than $300 million, prompting fans to ridicule McGregor for being stingy.
Rathorn shared a video and thanked his boss: "Thank you so much for the amazing birthday gift and for always taking care of me. It was such an honor to receive such a beautiful and generous gift from you personally. I will never forget it."
In 2020, Forbes named McGregor the highest paid athlete in the world.
Since 2018, Conor has fought only three times, losing to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021 (the Irishman broke his leg at the end of the first round).
However, he plans to return soon. The possibility of a fight against Michael Chandler is being considered.
