Twitter users with "superklim" are a florist. She said that many people complain about floral bouquets, that bouquets do not last long - and shared what the problem is and what to do about it.
Below is the author's text:
On the eve of a series of holidays, and in general, I can no longer read about “how to choose fresh flowers?” and “all florists are liars.”
Flowers should not have black or brown borders, spots, rotten or dry leaves
There are varieties of flowers that may seem tired to you, such as clematis, roses in “corpse” shades and others, but these are their characteristics.
Flowers stand in a store without foliage
This does not mean that they are already bad, it means that they are initially cleaned well and done correctly, as foliage in water accelerates the processes of rotting and deterioration of the flower. Less foliage = more nutrition for buds.
There are flowers that, in principle, do not have a long shelf life.
Anemones, peony roses, mimosa, lotuses, poppies and a number of other plants simply do not live at room temperature for more than 3-5 days. Beauty requires sacrifice and preparedness for the fact that not all flowers will last 2 weeks - alas.
Absolutely all flowers travel a long way before reaching you.
Sorting, packaging, delivery (from Kenya, Colombia, Africa, Israel, Holland, Italy, New Zealand). And the time of this delivery can be very different. Flowers appear on the shelves for quite some time already cut from the mother bush, you can buy them in their best form, and then their lifespan depends on many factors and further care for them.
About care
Trim the flowers! This is the main rule that many people forget. After cutting, the flowers continue their life processes and nutrition. When the flower is not in water, it sucks in air, forming an “air plug” that must be cut off and only then placed in water.
Water is important
Give your flowers plenty of fresh water! And it needs to be changed at least once every 2 days! Flowers with hairy and/or hollow stems - callas and carnations - do not need a lot of water, while others, on the contrary, really do! Foliage should not be in water, as this will cause everything to deteriorate faster.
Don't soak flowers in the bath
And do not add alcohol/sprite (substitute your own) to the water! Most flower shops sell or give special fertilizers along with the bouquet, which actually extend the life of plants, unlike traditional methods! Better than just water!
How often do you give/buy flowers?
