The attitude towards Valentine's Day is ambiguous, but it continues to be celebrated all over the world. Let's find out today how it appeared and what's special about it.

The history of Valentine's Day goes back to Ancient Rome. According to legend, Saint Valentine was a Christian priest who lived in Rome in the 3rd century AD. At that time, Emperor Claudius II forbade young people to marry, believing that unmarried men served better in the army. Valentin secretly performed weddings for the newlyweds, for which he was arrested and executed on February 14. Since then, this day has been considered Valentine's Day.

It is also interesting that after Valentine's Day, there was another holiday in Rome - the Lupercalia festival. It was held annually on the third day after the Ides of February (February 15 according to the Julian calendar). The priests from the Luperca cave gathered to sacrifice young goats and dogs on a special altar. After the rituals, people stripped naked and, covering their hips with goat skin, which symbolized the appearance of the deity, ran around the city and lashed those they met with pieces of skin. Then it was believed that the blow of the luper would grant women fertility and easy childbirth, so they exposed their bodies to the blows. At the end of the 5th century, the Pope banned this holiday. Here was a holiday next door to the Day of Love.

The history of Valentine's Day has passed through the centuries, continuing to evolve. In the Middle Ages, for example, the belief that bird couples were created on February 14 led to the day becoming a symbol of love and romance. People began exchanging letters and gifts to express their affection and affection for each other.

During the Victorian era, Valentine's Day became especially popular. The first valentines were created - postcards with tender messages, images of hearts and lovers. In addition, chocolates became a standard gift on this day, which became another tradition.

In the 20th century, this day became as commercial as possible. They began making romantic films, playing on people's feelings, releasing special gifts and in every possible way forcing people to spend money.
