Brazilian Magno Sergio Gomez and his friend ended up in intensive care after eating poisonous puffer fish that was improperly cut and prepared.
In the Brazilian city of Aracruz, Espirito Santo state, friends ended up in intensive care after eating pufferfish, a dangerous fish considered a delicacy. This was reported by The New York Post.
Magno Sergio Gomez, 46, received a blowfish as a gift from a friend. They had never tried this poisonous fish before. The friends decided to take a risk, and together they gutted it, boiled it and ate it with lemon juice.
After about an hour, both of them felt unwell. When Gomez's mouth began to go numb, he knew he needed a doctor. On the way to the hospital, numbness spread throughout the body, after which cardiac arrest occurred. Doctors managed to revive the man only eight minutes later. After that, they tried unsuccessfully to save him for 35 days.
Doctors told the family that he died from the poison, which quickly reached his head. Three days after his hospitalization, he suffered several seizures that significantly affected his brain. After this there was almost no chance of recovery

Gomez's friend was also taken to the hospital. He was luckier and survived, but still has difficulty walking.
The meat of many fish of the pufferfish family contains the nerve poison tetrodotoxin. It causes numbness of the lips and tongue, dizziness and vomiting. Then the victims' heart rate increases, blood pressure drops and muscle paralysis begins, which leads to respiratory arrest. Despite this, pufferfish are considered a delicacy in Southeast Asia. When properly prepared, the concentration of poison is reduced, which makes the fish suitable for consumption.
