The Bellevue, Washington, bomb squad discovered a rusty missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead in a local resident's garage, the police press service reported.

Employees of the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio contacted the police bomb disposal department, saying that a local resident had expressed a desire to donate an unnamed item that belonged to his deceased neighbor. He added that a neighbor bought the item during a sale. The “item” turned out to be a rocket.

Police responded to a call and reported that a Douglas AIR-2 Genie (also known as MB-1), an unguided air-to-air missile that could carry a 1.5-kiloton nuclear warhead, was found in the garage.

No ammunition or fuel was found in the rocket; the sapper team confirmed that the object was safe. Since the rocket was inert, and the military did not demand it back, the police left it to the owner, who volunteered to restore the “gift” to place it in the museum, the press service clarified.

The MB-1 was developed in the United States in the late 1950s and was in service with the Air Force during the Cold War. The missile's launch range is 9.5 km, which imposed restrictions on the tactics of use in nuclear weapons. The MB-1 was withdrawn from service in 1982, when aircraft capable of using it were withdrawn from service.
