A Chinese woman with many children left $2.8 million to her pets (5 photos)
A pensioner from Shanghai wrote a will according to which almost $3 million will go to her cats and dogs. A woman surnamed Liu deprived her children because they did not visit her.
The Chinese woman has three children. In her first will, she divided her funds equally between them. However, the heirs did not want to take care of their mother, so she reconsidered her decision.
After Liu's death, a local veterinary clinic will manage her money and take care of her pets.
The woman originally wanted to leave her fortune to the animals, but according to Cheng Kai, an official with the National Register of Wills, such a practice is not legal in China.
Chen explained, "However, there are alternatives. We advised Liu to appoint someone she trusts, in this case the owner of a veterinary clinic, to ensure the pets are properly cared for."
Of course, the pensioner was warned about the risks of transferring funds to the clinic.
The official added: "We told Liu that if her children change their attitude towards her, she can always rewrite the will."
This kind of story is not unique. Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld left $1.5 million to his cat Choupette before passing away in 2019 at the age of 85.
