A post on social networks helped raise money for repairs for a blind pensioner (4 photos + 1 video)
Amazing before-and-after photos show what a 70-year-old British woman's home looked like when it was covered in mold, and what it looks like now. This wonderful transformation was made possible thanks to caring people!
Pat, 70, was forced to move out of her home in Swindon, Wiltshire, just before Christmas after becoming chronically ill due to damp conditions covering the walls and furniture.
Her younger and more active friend shared photographs of walls corroded by mold on social networks, talking about the nightmarish living conditions of a disabled pensioner. Generous businesses and local residents have banded together and raised £120,000 to make a big difference.
Now Pat's house, which only had electricity in two rooms and no central heating for two years, is livable again.
“It's amazing what they've done for me,” Pat says. “I want to thank them from the bottom of my heart.” I’m very, very grateful to everyone who helped me.”
This is how it all started
Pat says what she really wants to do now is invite her friends over for a cup of tea.
“They can stop by on their way home from work, which is great,” she says. “Let my life be normal again.”
Before and after: evaluate the degree of transformation
Before the major refurbishment, Pat, who is registered blind and suffers from heart failure, washed herself using water from a kettle. In addition, there were rats in her house, which she called “horrible” and “scary.”
Her friend, Janet Reynolds, 44, helped her with her weekly shopping. But she hadn't set foot in the house since the pandemic and didn't know how dire the situation had become. When Pat asked Janet to help her with the cleaning, Janet came to her house and was shocked.
Janet says she was horrified by the scale of the problem
Because of the dampness, Pat began to cough constantly, and it developed into double pneumonia. She moved in with Janet just before Christmas
And even then it took a long time to persuade her
“The house was covered in thick black mold - it was terrible,” said Janet, who works as a cook in Swindon. “I could barely stand in it myself.” I've known Pat for 20 years - we worked together. She thinks of me as a daughter. But after Covid happened, she stopped letting me into the house.”
“I thought it was strange, and then she asked me to help with the cleaning. As soon as I entered the house, I realized that she needed to get out of there. Everything was covered in mold and she was taking antibiotics for double pneumonia.”
Janet said she "begged and cajoled" her 70-year-old friend to move in with her while she sought help renovating her home.
She created a GoFundMe page in hopes of getting some help to buy supplies and a repair crew. And then suddenly everything started to turn around, and as a result, money was raised to make a full-fledged renovation.

Pat dreams of inviting his friends over for a cup of tea
Although Pat feels "a little awkward", she is overwhelmed by the number of people who have come to her aid.
“She's a very proud woman,” says her friend Janet. “I told her there was nothing to be ashamed of.” She burst into tears. Can't believe everyone has been so generous. But the situation was realvery desperate."
