Jack Frankland, 21, was caught on CCTV making off with a luxury watch from a Costa Coffee cafe in Northwich, Cheshire. The 70-year-old pensioner expected to sell the accessory for £10,000.
Frankland committed the theft shortly before his rape trial. This week, a British man pleaded guilty to seducing an underage girl and was sentenced to 32 months in prison.
Frankland saw an advertisement for a Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea watch and made an appointment with the seller. But instead of handing over £10,000, the thief ran away from the coffee shop.
The incident occurred on March 26 last year.
The elderly man failed to keep up with the criminal.
Police learned Frankland had driven to Northwich from Bradford, West Yorkshire, in a gray Vauxhall Corsa with false number plates. It also turned out that he called a taxi and fled.
The officers found the criminal's phone number. At that moment, Jack was already under investigation for rape. His house was searched, but the watch was never found.
Frankland pleaded guilty after his victim was able to secretly record him apologizing for "raping her". He also pleaded guilty to assault by beating, possessing a knife, breaching a restraining order and stealing a Rolex watch.
He was sentenced to 32 months in prison for rape and a further 16 months for theft.
Claire Heatley, a spokeswoman for Cheshire Police, said: "This case is a reminder of the risks associated with buying and selling goods online. "Only use trusted sites and always pay using a secure payment system, otherwise you are at your own risk if something goes wrong. "Lost money. Fortunately, in this case, the victim was able to recoup some of the losses through insurance, but that doesn't always happen."
