A Boeing 737 door that came off in flight was found in the backyard of a Portland resident (5 photos)

Bad luck, a week ago the Boeing company asked the airlines to check for loose bolts in the rudder control system, but it turned out that on this series of aircraft the screws were loose almost everywhere.

A schoolteacher found a broken door on an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 Max 9 plane in his backyard on Saturday. Previously, the aircraft manufacturer appealed to residents of the city of Portland with a request to find a fragment of the plane.

It is noted that the emergency exit door collapsed from a height of 16,000 feet (about 5 km). Fortunately, there was no destruction on the ground or casualties. It can also be called a miracle that during the emergency none of the 171 passengers were injured; only one man lost his phone - he was pulled overboard by air currents. However, everything could have ended much more sadly if the plane at the time of the accident was in the middle of the route, and not almost over the airport.

Where the emergency exit door fell

According to the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the found emergency exit door is a "key missing component" that will help determine the cause of the plane's depressurization. According to preliminary data, the cause of the accident was loose equipment, that is, those same loose screws or their complete absence, which Boeing had previously warned about.

"As our maintenance technicians began preparing our fleet of 737-9 MAX aircraft for inspections, they gained access to the area in question. Initial reports from our technicians indicate that loose equipment was visible on some aircraft," Alaska Airlines said after the incident.

As for the 737 MAX line of aircraft, European air carriers have already suspended their operation. These airliners are considered the most problematic - when checking a new batch of Boeing 737 MAX 9, United Airlines engineers found loose bolts in the emergency exit door plugs on five of the 79 aircraft. But this is not the main problem of the airliner. Previously, two planes crashed due to the “smart MCAS system,” which corrects the aircraft’s position in flight, killing 346 people.

In 2020, 400 new 737 MAX aircraft were inspected due to fuel tanks containing foreign objects - fragments of tools and rags.

According to statistics, previous generations of Boeing 737 had an average of 0.2 accidents per million flights, but for the new MAX 9 this figure is 4 accidents per million flights.

By the way, a resident of Portland found a phone on Monday that had flown out after part of the fuselage. It is noteworthy that the gadget did not receive any visible damage

“The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft is a very unsuccessful product. This fact was proven in the bloodiest way when two plane crashes occurred in a row in Indonesia and Ethiopia for the same reason, which caused a lot of noise in the aviation world and forced the American authorities to punish very seriously Boeing and the Civil Aviation Administration of the United States for grossly violating American and global legislation when certification issues were transferred to the manufacturer, which is strictly prohibited,” Oleg Smirnov, Honored Civil Aviation Pilot of the USSR, Vice Deputy Minister of Civil Aviation of the USSR, commented on the incident.
