A British doctor crossed Antarctica alone and set a world record (7 photos)

While the majority of people were finishing their salads and planning to go outside so as not to lose their upright walking skills, this girl wasted no time.

Briton Harpreet Chandy, according to The Guardian, crossed Antarctica alone on skis. The physiotherapist, who is serving in the British Army, had to take leave to do this. The 34-year-old woman was able to cover a distance of 1,130 kilometers in 31 days and 13 hours.

The officer told the following about her feelings from the campaign:

I was tired to the point of exhaustion, but I am sincerely glad that I took this step and it worked out for me. Antarctica is an amazing place and an absolute privilege to be in. This is not a place that can be conquered by just anyone, it is a place that should be treated with respect and hope that it will allow you to pass through it safely.

She beat the previous record holder, Canadian Caroline Cote, by a day and a half. It may take several months for the new record to be confirmed.

Chandy left Hercules Bay on the Ronne Ice Shelf on November 26 and arrived at the South Pole at 2.24am UK time on Thursday. I must say that this is not the girl’s first experience. In 2021, she already made a similar solo trip, falling slightly short of the record. The hike was not the easiest: the traveler lost 20 kilograms of weight and received several minor injuries. Because of one, I even had to undergo surgery and spend a long time recovering.

This time, Chandi focused as hard as she could and completed the longest solo unsupported one-way polar ski expedition. She skied 12-13 hours a day and carried a sleigh weighing 75 kilograms, which was loaded with essentials for any emergency.

The British woman said that she had to carefully calculate her strengths and capabilities. She could not control external factors – the blinding sun, a snowstorm and a temperature of -30 °C. But she was able to correctly calculate the time and energy in order to walk at the optimal pace - not too fast and not too slow, and ultimately achieve her goal.
