The charm of a luxurious abandoned hotel lost in the Cambodian jungle (14 photos)

Virgin nature and the creation of human hands. There is something bewitching and magical at the same time in such a union. A clear proof is the colonial-style Bokor Hill Hotel, lost in the Cambodian jungle.

Near the coastal city of Kampot in Cambodia lies a cluster of old abandoned buildings closely associated with the country's recent history. This ghostly place is the Bokor Hill Hotel, consisting of many crumbling buildings scattered across the top of the hill.

Bokor Hill Station was originally built by French colonialists as a refuge from the onslaught of Phnom Penh. The complex included the Bokor Hill Resort & Casino hotel, shops, a post office, a church and even a small palace.

Construction and history

Construction of Bokor Hill began in 1921 and lasted 9 months. It is said that 900 local workers died in its course, but the French considered that the sacrifices were justified, since the working conditions were slave-like, and the lives of people were practically worthless.

Local residents talk in half whispers about the ghosts of this place. Which is not surprising given the number of victims. The complex was conceived as a resting place for the colonialists, where they could shop, spend time at the card table, and even pray.

Again, according to local residents, losers who lost to smithereens even threw themselves into the abyss from a cliff located behind the casino building.

The hotel was first abandoned by the French in 1940, and the station was finally abandoned in 1972. The beauty and aesthetics of this place did not allow even the Khmer Rouge, representatives of the extreme left movement in the communist movement in Cambodia, to erase this relic of colonization from the face of the earth. They made the complex their base, the status of which “Bokor Hill” remained until the 90s.

New life

The Bokor Plateau belongs to the Cambodian authorities. But they transferred the lease rights to Sokimex Group. This company planned from the very beginning to transform the place into a real holiday paradise, starting with the construction of a new asphalt road.

Something here was broken, burned and ruined. But overall the place retained its unique flavor and was ideal for relaxation. They even filmed movies here.

The company paved a new road, carried out partial reconstruction, and built new buildings. As a result, the place became eclectic - on the one hand, a chic new building, on the other, semi-ghost-looking buildings that are more than a century old.

Some buildings, for example, the post office, were destroyed. But the church still looks dignified and very authentic and fascinating when the rays of the setting sun illuminate the stone altar. Like the former summer palace, which was called Black.

Apparently, the tenant company plans to completely renovate this place, returning it to its former luxury. But for now it retains its uniqueness thanks to the combination of two eras. And the old walls collect the autographs of tourists, so that someday they will turn into dust and memories.
