Dog farm owners are threatening to release more than two million animals onto the streets of Seoul.

In the capital of South Korea, farmers protested against the law banning the consumption of dogs and fought with police. It is noted that only 200 farmers took to the streets of the city, and yesterday’s protest can be called a trial balloon, since most of the entrepreneurs involved in raising and slaughtering dogs for restaurants and butcher shops live in the provinces.

The chairman of the Korean Dog Breeders Association, Ju Yong Bong, who participated in the protest, said that if the law is passed, millions of dogs will end up on the streets of the country, the local publication Hani reports. He promised that farmers would release more than two million dogs into Seoul's central Yongsan district.

Let us recall that the government of South Korea and the ruling Civil Power party announced the preparation of a ban on the cultivation, slaughter and consumption of dogs two weeks ago. They promised to develop and adopt a corresponding law within a year.

The South Korean government explained the need to pass the law due to changes in the lifestyle and culture of Koreans, who are increasingly keeping dogs as pets. The second reason is the negative image of South Korea, which is emerging in the international arena due to the wild, unusual culinary preferences of some citizens and the existence of an entire industry specializing in the cultivation and slaughter of man’s four-legged friends.

According to local authorities, there are more than 1,150 dog farms in the country, 34 slaughter enterprises, 219 companies provide sales, and more than 1,600 restaurants have dog meat dishes on their menus. The government managed to squeeze out such farms from Seoul and some large cities. However, the addiction to dog meat is most strongly felt in the “unenlightened” province. Which, apparently, will not give up traditional crafts and dishes without a fight.
