12 times when films based on Marvel and DC comics won an Oscar (9 photos)
The era of super-popularity and super-success of comic book movies is apparently coming to an end. Marvel studio projects have generally been of poor quality, which is reflected in the ratings and box office receipts of their latest projects, while DC studios are canceling almost completely finished films. The peak of the form has passed, and probably the best projects in this genre are already behind us.
We know for sure that, in general, comic book films collected decent amounts in theaters, and audiences liked them, but how are they doing with prestigious awards? How's it going with the Oscars?
The answer may surprise you: Marvel clearly lost to DC here.
Between them, the major comic studios have 66 Oscar nominations and 11 wins. In this post we will list only the winners, there are only eight such films, and we will indicate why exactly they received their statuettes.
Superman (DC, 1978)
The film won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
Batman (DC, 1989)
The film received an Oscar for best production design.
Spider-Man 2 (Marvel, 2004)
The film won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
The Dark Knight (DC, 2008)
The film has two Oscar wins:
Best Supporting Actor (Heath Ledger)
best sound editing
Heath Ledger became the first actor in history to win an Oscar for his role in a superhero film. And there are only two such actors - guess who the second is.
Suicide Squad (DC, 2016)
The film received an Oscar for best makeup and hairstyles. The Oscar winning nature of the extremely unsuccessful Suicide Squad has long been considered one of the main paradoxes of modern cinema.
Black Panther (Marvel, 2018)
The film has three Oscar wins:
The best music
best costume design
best work by production designer
Joker (DC, 2019)
The film has two Oscar wins:
Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix, second in history)
best soundtrack
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (Marvel, 2022)
The film won an Oscar for Best Costume Design.
Such things - of all the Marvel films, only two parts of “Black Panther” brought the studio Oscars.
Total: Marvel studio films have 5 Oscar wins (and 29 nominations). And the DC studio has 7 wins (and 37 nominations).
