We must use all historical chances, because we have an alternative - dictatorship, - Galina Starovoitova

21 November 2023
On November 20, 1998, Galina Starovoitova, politician, candidate for President of the Russian Federation, was killed in St. Petersburg

In St. Petersburg, Galina Starovoitova was shot at the entrance to her own house. State Duma deputy, presidential candidate, author of the unadopted lustration law.

Politicians need to be changed as often as diapers, and most importantly, for the same reason

Starovoitova was born in Chelyabinsk and lived in Leningrad. I entered the “male” Military Mech, but despite my success in strength of materials, I quit. I studied psychology. She defended her PhD at the Institute of Ethnography. She studied the phenomenon of longevity in Abkhazia and Nagorno-Karabakh.

I don’t play women’s chess, if I do, it’s in the first league

In 1989 she became a people's deputy of the USSR from Armenia - more than 75% of the votes were cast for her. In July 1991 she became an adviser to the President of the RSFSR Yeltsin on interethnic issues. I was in London during the putsch. A familiar KGB officer warned that it was better not to return - she was number 8 on the arrest list.

I think the putsch will not be successful. This group of criminals resembles the people who seized the telephone exchange building. But they have no idea how to control it (BBC, 08/19/1991)

In 1992, she submitted to the Supreme Council a draft law on lustration - “On the ban on professions for those pursuing the policies of a totalitarian regime.”

Restrictions on professions mean a temporary ban - for the transition period, when the possibility of revenge of the totalitarian regime still remains - to hold positions of territorial executive power, starting with the heads of administrations of districts, cities, regions up to the ministers of the republics and the Russian Federation as a whole.

The law was not adopted. Neither then, nor on the second attempt in 1997.

In 1994, she gathered thousands of people in a rally in Moscow against the entry of troops into Chechnya. In 1996, she was nominated as a presidential candidate, but the election commission refused to register, rejecting some of the signatures.

25 years have passed since Starovoytova’s murder. The organizer, ex-GRU warrant officer Yuri Kolchin, and hired killers were in the dock. The names of the leaders of the Tambov organized crime group Mikhail Glushchenko and Vladimir Kumarin are mentioned as those involved. But who and why gave the order to kill the politician is still unknown.
