You can't hold pardon: a comma was added in the case of an obese Italian criminal (6 photos)

A quarrel between lovers in the summer of 2017 ended in tragedy. The guy brutally dealt with his girlfriend because of a comment about bread crumbs in the bed, inflicting more than 50 stab wounds.

But what happened next is more reminiscent of a tragicomedy in genre. And crumbs occupy not the last place in it.

The couple looked quite happy

Dimitri Fricano, 35, from Biella, Italy, mercilessly killed 25-year-old Erica Preti during their holiday in Sardinia in 2017, stabbing the poor woman 57 times for leaving too many crumbs on the bed in their hotel room. For this attack, Fricano was sentenced to 30 years in prison, but will now be free. Almost free - under house arrest.

Why did the Italian receive such an exclusive right?

Too fat for jail

The sentence of 30 years in prison was handed down in 2019. But due to the pandemic, the killer began serving his sentence only in April last year.

From that moment on, the weight of the initially not very slender prisoner exceeded 200 kg, which forced the Turin Supervisory Court to decide to release Fricano from prison for medical reasons.

Last week, a court ruled that an obese convict could not continue to serve his sentence due to “incompatibility with the prison regime.” Due to his excess weight, he cannot move independently without a wheelchair or crutches. In addition, he is a heavy smoker.

According to the judges, keeping Fricano in a correctional facility poses a threat to his life, since the administration cannot provide him with a special diet for weight loss.

Fricano will spend the remainder of his sentence under house arrest at his family's home near Milan, where he will have access to healthier food.

The decision angered the victim's family, who called Fricano's release a disgrace.

The convict’s lawyers fought for their client like lions and stated that in addition to everything, the man suffers from a whole bunch of diseases, including anxiety-depressive syndrome with bulimia, personality disorder and sleep apnea.

Doctors expressed concern that Fricano was at high risk of cardiovascular disease and needed a specialized diet that the prison in Turin could not provide.

After release

The judges of the Turin Supervisory Court agreed with this opinion, determining that Fricano “needs assistance that cannot be provided in this institution.” What’s noteworthy is that the Italian initially blamed robbers for the murder of his girlfriend, but eventually admitted his guilt.

According to popular belief, fat people are kind. Apparently, in this particular instance, the kindness turned out to be off the charts. As does the absurdity of the court decision.
