Small, aggressive, secretive, living underground - who is it? There are many options, but in light of the popularity of the fantasy genre, we can assume that these are gnomes. But no one has ever seen them, and these Lilliputians managed to appear in our world in all their splendor. 
The story begins in 1932, when two prospectors, Cecil Main and Frank Carr, working in the San Pedro Mountains in Wyoming, discovered a small figurine. The men came across a tiny cave, the entrance to which was too narrow for an ordinary person. It had to be expanded with explosives.

In a small grotto, gold miners discovered a mummy. The size of the creature frozen in the lotus position, clasping itself with its arms, resembled a baby. But that’s where the similarities ended, since the mummy didn’t even look like a human. 
In the conditions of the dry cave, the body was perfectly preserved. There were even tiny nails on the hands. When standing, the creature's height would not exceed 45 centimeters. What surprised people most of all was the head of an unknown creature. The skull seems to be compressed in the upper part, the eyelids are bulging, a very wide, thin-lipped mouth and a large nose.
The men took the find with them. But when they showed the mummy to others, Frank and Cecil laughed, calling it a bad craft, a terrible doll, and even the mummified carcass of a small monkey. 
Only years later, already in the 50s, when the find began to be studied in more detail, researchers became convinced that the body structure of the “monkey” was almost identical to that of a human. Scientists also discovered multiple fractures and came to the conclusion that in front of them was a child with anencephaly. The disease is an intrauterine malformation of the fetus that occurs in the early stages of pregnancy and is usually associated with exposure to harmful environmental factors. The pathology is manifested by the absence of the cerebral hemispheres, underdevelopment of the bones of the cranial vault and soft tissues of the head. 
This defect has a 100% fatality rate. Children die in the first hours after birth. The maximum life expectancy of such babies does not exceed two years.

Some time later, biologist and anthropologist Dr. Harry Shapiro became interested in the find. And he completely refuted the previous assumption: X-rays showed that the body corresponded not only to an adult, but even to an elderly person, whose age ranged from 60 to 70 years.
Shapiro also discovered teeth in the mummy’s mouth. Uncharacteristic for humans - sharp vampire fangs. 
In the 70s, the research was continued by forensic anthropologist George Gill. He suggested that the mummy belonged to a child - a representative of some extinct tribe of Indians, who were characterized by small stature. The hypothesis looked plausible in the presence of real evidence - pygmies, whose height varies from 130 to 145 centimeters. And the child really had anencephaly. The radiocarbon dating method showed that the baby was born before the beginning of the 18th century.
Modern research methods would allow us to learn much more. But after Gill, the mummy came to the city of Meetitse, where it was displayed as a curiosity in the local pharmacy. Then the baby from San Pedro changed owners several times, and all traces of him were lost. 
Shoshone
As for alternative versions, Indian tribes, for example, the Shoshone and Paiute, have legends about a wild and incredibly bloodthirsty tribe of little people. The tiny stature of the Nimerigar, as the Indians call them, was compensated by excellent training and aggression. Arrows soaked in a secret poisonous compound also helped to easily deal with enemies.
