Lucy Edwards began losing her sight at the age of 11, and six years later she was completely blind. In 2015, before losing her sight, she met 27-year-old artist Ollie Cave, and the couple became engaged in June 2018. When planning her wedding, Lucy wanted her future husband and guests to experience the ceremony the same way she did.
When Lucy walked down the aisle, all the guests and the groom were wearing blindfolds.
The couple has set a wedding date for August 31, 2023. "My family was worried that I would miss one of the most important moments in my life. And I decided that they should feel it with me," Edwards, 27, explained.
“I didn’t think I’d be a blind bride when I met Ollie,” says the Birmingham-based blogger and TV presenter. “I was the happiest on my wedding day, but also the saddest. By the end of the ceremony, everyone’s headbands were wet with tears. ".
At age 8, Lucy was hospitalized after a routine visit to the eye doctor. Four years earlier, the girl was diagnosed with incontentia pigmenti, a rare genetic skin disease that can lead to blindness. By the age of 17, she was completely blind.
By this time, Lucy had been dating her future husband Ollie for several months, but she understood that she would not be able to see her wedding day.
"I noticed all the good things about my wedding. I don't like negative energy. My dress was very tactile. I felt the sequins under the chiffon and every single flower. When I heard the echo in the hall, I didn't even need to see it. You could smell it too flowers. I think people were shocked at how much they could feel."
Lucy and Ollie rented three greenhouses in Kew in southwest London. The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, are equipped for people with disabilities: audio guides, wide doorways, ramps. In addition, the newlyweds provided Braille signs on the tables, and there were also many special dishes. So that the bride would not stain her dress, the canapés were glazed with sauce instead of served with sauce. Even molecular cocktails were brought from Spain.
"It was a sad moment, but very poignant. I have never experienced such strong conflicting emotions. I felt a pain in my chest, but at the same time I felt trepidation because I was marrying the man I love."
