How does a sea cucumber protect itself?
The sea cucumber... is a very interesting character. It evokes a huge number of different associations in people (who has enough imagination for that). And in general, the cucumber looks like an absurd and defenseless creature. But Mother Nature has prepared some means of protection for all her children. And this is how the sea cucumber reacts to danger.
Basically, the sea cucumber shoots a bunch of sticky threads straight out of its anus. This, by the way, can be a very formidable weapon. This is a kind of “web” of proteins similar to those found in the web or threads of the silkworm. These proteins give the threads high strength. Plus, they lengthen by about 20 times. And the web instantly becomes sticky, and this, in turn, is a death trap for any predator.
So everyone stay still, otherwise the cucumber will shoot!
