Scientists have discovered a new planet - K2-18 b. Exoplanet in eight times larger than Earth, and located at a distance of 120 light years. Its atmosphere is similar to that of Earth, and signs have been found on it possible existence of life.

Scientists have made an exciting discovery in their search for alien life. Using the James Webb Orbital Telescope, they discovered a new planet called K2-18 b. It is 8.6 times larger than Earth mass, and signs of the possible existence of life were found on it. Her the atmosphere most likely consists of hydrogen with admixtures of methane and carbon dioxide, as well as carbon molecules and dimethyl sulfide molecules. The latter surprised astronomers most of all - after all, on Earth they are a by-product of phytoplankton activity in the marine environment. The presence of carbon dioxide and methane may also indicate that the planet is suitable for life. Scientists call the new planet "Super Earth".

To confirm the presence of dimethyl sulfide molecules More research will be needed, but scientists are already amazed by their finds. If the discovery is confirmed, K2-18b will become one of the planets where alien life is most likely to exist. In addition, astronomers determined that the new planet belongs to the Hyceans - a class of exoplanets, belonging to the type of ocean planets. The atmospheres of these planets are rich hydrogen, and the planets themselves have many oceans, which increases the likelihood the emergence of life. There are probably many oceans on the planet.

Now scientists aim to more thoroughly study the chemical composition of the new planet using the Webb telescope.

"Our discovery is a major achievement in the science of exoplanets. In particular, we have proven that we can detect molecules carbon-based on low-mass exoplanets. Another potential achievement is to prove the presence of oceans on this planet, and confirm whether its atmosphere is indeed largely dimethyl sulfide molecules are present," says lead author Research, Prof. Nikku Madhusudhan.
