Five thousand diggers are crowded at the bottom of a crater in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, swinging hammers and pickaxes to extract pieces of motley blue and gold ore from the ground. The huge mine at Shabar, about 45 kilometers from Kolwezi, is a deposit of cobalt, a strategic metal that abounds in the impoverished Central African country. Mining has been carried out for years in gross violation of the law, health and safety regulations and contrary to claims by the area's owner, a subsidiary of the Swiss mining and commodities giant Glencore.
