The largest ruby weighing 55.22 carats was sold at an auction for $35 million in New York.
The rarest gem Estrela de Fura went under the hammer already 90 seconds after the start of trading, Narodnaya Volya reports Online.
The gem that became the largest in history gem-quality ruby, discovered in July 2022 in Africa.
Ruby in one of the mines in Mozambique was mined by a Canadian company Fura Gems, which called Estrela de Fura "the most valuable and important" and an "extremely rare" stone.
The ruby originally weighed 101 carats, almost twice as much as than in its current form. The stone was given a symmetrical shape and polished, thereby improving its color and brilliance before release on market. This resulted in "bright red hues due to multiple internal reflections”, noted in the Swiss gemological institute.
